What is a Principal Designer?
Taking control of health & safety during pre-construction
A Principal Designer is an organisation or an individual appointed by the client to take control of the pre-construction phase of any project involving more than one contractor. Principal Designer Services are offered by Eryri Consulting Limited.
The Principal Designer’s role is in influencing how risks to health and safety are managed throughout a project. Design decisions made during the pre-construction phase can significantly influence whether the project is delivered in a way that secures the health and safety of everyone affected by the work.

Eryri Consulting can undertake all of the Principal Designer’s duties as an independent professional CDM adviser.
What is the role?
Plan, manage, monitor and coordinate
In the pre-construction phase the Principal Designer will plan, manage, monitor and co-ordinate all aspects of health & safety of the project. Relevant information and existing documents, such as a Health & Safety File and asbestos surveys, are reviewed where they may influence design work before construction starts.
Monitor
Review relevant information, existing documents and design development that may influence project risk.
Coordinate
Work with everyone involved in pre-construction to ensure communication, cooperation and coordinated activity.
Advise
Help and advise the client and provide designers and contractors with essential information to carry out their duties effectively and legally.

Collaborative pre-construction support
The Principal Designer works closely with other project designers, including Structural Engineers and M&E Engineers, to help eliminate or reduce the likelihood of health and safety risks on the project.
- Coordinate with designers and other pre-construction participants.
- Support communication and cooperation between project parties.
- Review information that may influence design and construction.
- Help eliminate or reduce foreseeable health and safety risks.

What is included?
Principal Designer duties Eryri can undertake

Pre-Design Information Pack (PDI)
Prepare the PDI developed by Eryri Consulting to assist designers in understanding their duties.

Pre-Construction Information Pack (PCI)
Collate information from surveys, service drawings and designer risk-management information from all parties.

Design Reviews
Review designs for suitability and health and safety, including consideration of the General Principles of Prevention.

Project Meetings
Attend pre-contract meetings and Design Team Meetings where required.

HSE Notification
Support notification to HSE, noting that this is a Client Duty for Commercial Clients.

Construction Phase Plan Review
Review the Principal Contractor’s Construction Phase Plan.
07
Site Inspections
If required, carry out site inspections to ensure compliance.
08
Health & Safety File
Prepare the Health & Safety File to be handed over to the client.
Important: If the Principal Designer role is terminated before the end of the project, the Health & Safety File will be passed on to the Principal Contractor to complete the file.
